8/20/2008 Update or Other Action Public inquiry on adjacent property. Cursory review of the 1993 release investigation, 1997 closure sampling, and 1997 correspondence suggests that decision to change site status to "no further assessment or cleanup" to be substantiated by the information in the administrative file. Tank removal in 1993 involved excavating over 300 cubic yards of contaminated soil. Excavation was limited in extent in some directions by site features such as fiber optic cable, concrete pad, building, monitoring well, and heating oil tank. Seven GRO and BTEX confirmation samples with benzene above Method 2 migration to groundwater levels. Benzene ranged from 13 mg/kg to ND with the greater concentrations at the deepest part of the excavation in the northern corner @ ~16 ft bgs. Groundwater samples were to have been collected but water table was reported to be low, so it was intended that a return visit be made in a later attempt to collect groundwater from nearby private wells and/or monitoring well at the edge of the excavation. 1997 closure report included sampling of the landspread soil which resulted in nondetect for BTEX. The monitoring well was again reported to be dry and subsequently abadoned. Estimated amount of soil contamination remaining (~1 cubic yard) suggested to be clay layer. Clay layer could also act as confining layer. Keather McLoone
