Site Report: FAA - FIRE ISLAND VORTAC
We make every effort to ensure the data presented here is accurate based on the best available information currently on file with DEC. It is therefore subject to change as new information becomes available. We recommend contacting the assigned project staff prior to making decisions based on this information.
Problems/Comments
LUST sites associated with FAA activities on Fire Island. The island is located approximately six miles west of Anchorage International Airport. USTs 46-C-1 and UST 46-C-2 were removed in 1993; a No Further Action determination was granted for these tanks in 1994.
UST 48-A-1 was a 20,000 gallon diesel UST located southeast of the VOR building. Confirmation sampling indicates that the concentration of contaminants is below ADEC cleanup levels.
UST 48-A-2 was a 500-gallon gasoline UST located on the east side of the VOR building (Building 418). The 1993 Fire Island Corrective Action Report indicates that full characterization of the horizontal extent of contamination was not possible due to the proximity of contaminated soil to the VOR building. Given the site conditions and remaining contaminant concentrations, a Method Three determination under AAC 75.340(e) was made at this Area of Concern to establish the migration to groundwater cleanup levels as the maximum remaining concentrations. All of the remaining concentrations are below the applicable Method Two direct contact and ingestion/inhalation cleanup levels.

Contaminants remaining at the sites do not pose a risk to human health under an unrestricted land use scenario. HRC modeling demonstrated that residual petroleum contaminants in soil at the VOR and Valve Box AOCs do not pose a migration to groundwater risk/concern. This determination was made using Method 3 of the site cleanup rules. |

Requirements
Description |
Details |
Advance approval required to transport soil or groundwater off-site. |
|
Movement or use of contaminated material (including on site) in a manner that results in a violation of the water quality standards is prohibited (18 AAC 70) |
|
Groundwater Use Restrictions |
Groundwater in the state of Alaska is protected for aquaculture use. In the event that an aquaculture facility uses groundwater from this site in the future, additional testing may be required to ensure that aquatic life criteria under 18 AAC 70 are not exceeded. |
