Problems/Comments
On October 27, 1994, DOT staff discovered 1050 gallons diesel fuel leaked from a faulty valve in Life Support Building. Diesel contamination of gravel pad and free product observed on ground water table at approximately 7' below surface. Diesel releases of 400 gallons on 1/11/95 and 2200 gallons on 1/18/96 add to the site. DOT contracted with Shannon and Wilson to install 11 monitoring wells at product recovery wells. Contractor estimated a recovery of 880 gallons of diesel prior to terminating recovery efforts in November 1994. Recovery rate was 10 gallons per day when operations ceased. 110 gallons was recovered from 1/11/95 spill and 925 gallons from 1/18/96 spill. Spill number 96399901801, PERP file number 330.02.048. Last staff assigned were Sundet and Burger.

10/27/1994 | Update or Other Action | (Old R:Base Action Code = NOR - Notice of Release Letter (LUST)). Response contractor recovered approximately 883 gallons of product in a series of intercept trenches. Diesel contamination of ground water confirmed. Plume advanced at least 150 feet in the first week. | Scott Rose |
2/19/1997 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | Site transfered from PERP to CS and meeting held with DOT. No soil data has ever been collected so plan for 1997 is to close this data gap and continue monitoring groundwater to confirm that plume is decreasing. | Ray Burger |
4/27/2005 | GIS Position Updated | TopoZone Pro, Report Maps and All Topo Maps NAD 83 | Kim DeRuyter |
7/5/2006 | Update or Other Action | Site transferred from Pikul to DeRuyter. | Aggie Blandford |
8/31/2006 | Conditional Closure Approved | A conditional closure status was approved for the site. Based on the information provided to date, ADEC has determined that the cleanup actions (soil removal and product recovery) employed at the ADOT&PF Jim River Maintenance Camp has been effective in removing the majority of the contamination. The contamination remaining beneath the generator and life support buildings does not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and it will naturally attenuate over time. | Kim DeRuyter |
8/31/2006 | Institutional Control Record Established | An Institutional Control will be added to the ADEC Contaminated Sites Database identifying the nature and extent of contamination remaining on site. In accordance with 18 AAC 75.325(i), ADEC approval must be obtained prior to removal and/or disposal of soil or groundwater from this site to an off-site location. In addition, the ADEC should be notified prior to any excavation in the impacted area as screening for impacted material and the use of properly trained excavation personnel may be required. In accordance with 18 AAC 75.380(d)(2), additional investigation and cleanup may be required if new information is discovered which leads the ADEC to make a determination that the cleanup described in this decision is not protective of human health, safety, and welfare or the environment. | Kim DeRuyter |
12/31/2008 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Reviewed Scope of Work for proposed Maintenance building to be located on-site. Sent comments to ADOT&PF. | Neal Everson |
4/12/2011 | Institutional Control Compliance Review | IC review conducted, tickler system updated, staff changed to IC Unit. | Evonne Reese |
