REM; Funded by USFS. Aoki Construction removed (3) USTs on 10/4/89. During removal of diesel UST tainted soils were discovered at the edge of the loading dock. Possible materials spilled include fuel, paint, and wood preservative. Approx. 10 cubic yards of this material was stockpiled separately. Tainted soils extended to foundation of oil/gas bldg. Removal of (2) gasoline USTs revealed extensive contamination. Approx. 200 cubic yards of heavily contaminated soils removed. Estimated 15,000 square feet of gasoline contamination remains in place. Hardpan or bedrock was encountered at 20 feet. Groundwater seepage was encountered 10 to 14 feet below the surface. The excavations were filled and compacted with clean gravels and paved. ADEC responded in a letter dated 11/3/89 to clarify proper stockpiling of excavated soils and sampling analyses of drinking water wells. ADEc requested a water well survey within 1,500 feet of the site. |

Release Investigation |
SI; Funded by USFS. The primary contaminants identified are gasoline (BTEX and TPH) and pentachlorophenol, a wood preservative. The diesel UST was installed in 1963 and the gasoline USTs in 1977. On-site drinking well, 220 feet from the USTs,to be tested. Sieve analysis of soils from test pit indicate clean, sandy gravels with cobbles, a lense of silt. Kenai Lake is 620 feet from the site. Analytical results from former UST excavations: 145.53 ppm BTEX, 57.6 ppm TPH, 78.2 ppm pentachlorophenol, 0.0914 ppm dibromochloromethane, 0.0531 ppm 1,2, dichloroethane |

Release Investigation |
SI; USFS funded. E&E conducted a Phase I site assessment dated 7/2/90. During the field inspection, the oil/gas storage shed, stockpiled soils and the areas surrounding the storage bldg., warehouse, office and carpenter shop were investigated. A PID was used to measure volatile organic vapors in the surface soils. No runoff or overland flow pathways from the site area to adjacent water bodies were observed. |

Release Investigation |
SI; USFS funding. E&E monitored the sampling and installation of (11) soil borings in the areas potentially affected by the gasoline UST. With the exception of (3) borings, all borings were completed to 40 feet. Refusal at 20 feet in (3) borings attributed to boulders. Three soil borings were drilled at the Boneyard Warehouse, an area separate from the former UST sites. Three monitoring wells were installed based on soil boring results, in the former UST area. Groundwater was encountered 20 to 24 feet below the surface and moves towards the south to southwest. Three offsite wells were sampled for VOC and phenols. BTEX and pentachlorophenol were not detected. A total of 32 of the 45 subsurface soils from the UST area had detected BTEX and TPH. Pentachlorophenol was not detected. Borings indicate subsurface contamination migrating to the south. Pentachlorophenol was not detected in any groundwater sample. Samples from MW-3 had 5 ppb and 7.2 ppb benzene during two separate sa |

RAPR; USFS funded. The plan addressed gasoline contaminated subsurface and stockpiled soils, surface soils around carpenters shop and subsurface soils at the Boneyard Warehouse. Estimated surface area for subsurface vapor extraction 6,500 square feet. ADEC responds in letter dated 5/9/91 that vapor extraction as a means of soil remediation and long term GW monitoring are acceptable approaches. Remediation plan for the pentachlorophenol detected at the Boneyard Warehouse is requested. ADEC cleanup levels for OCDD (Dioxin) is 13 ppb and 5,000 ppb for pentachlorophenol per project file notes. |
