Problems/Comments

Contaminated soils were encountered during the removal of 1,000-gallon and 3,000-gallon regulated underground storage tanks (USTs). Approximately 20 cubic yards of contaminated soil was excavated. Analytical results verified that diesel range organics, gasoline range organics, and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) levels exceeded site cleanup levels for soil. Contaminated soils also remain in place. In 2022, soil borings and monitoring wells were advanced to characterize the soil contamination in the area of the former USTs. Analytical samples results indicated that contamination was not migrating and contaminant concentrations were below cleanup levels in the groundwater. In 2024, an additional soil investigation was conducted in the fuel dispenser area and groundwater was sampled again. Analytical soil samples collected from test pits confirmed contamination was present at approximately 9-10 feet below ground surface, but the contamination plume appeared stable. The groundwater analytical results were below cleanup levels. Petroleum contamination remains in the subsurface soils above the DEC human health, ingestion, and/or inhalations exposure pathway cleanup levels. Groundwater contamination has not been documented above DEC cleanup levels.

Contamination was detected above cleanup levels in two locations. Test pit 3, located approximately 20 feet west of the fuel dispenser, had exceedances of gasoline range organics, volatile organic compounds, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Test pit 11, located approximately 8 feet south of the dispenser and near the building, had exceedances of volatile organic compounds. There were no detections of contaminants above cleanup levels in the groundwater Dawn Wilburn
