Problems/Comments

Four UST's (10,000 gal each) on site, two containing heating oil, jet fuel, and avgas. Also one above ground tank with diesel. Tanks within 500 ft. from well. Also may be 20,000 gallon UST periodically used for jet fuel or diesel - approximately 425 ft. NE of well. Using annex well which is 300 ft. SE of contaminated well. Water depth 17 ft. - 24 ft. Spill in late 1960's. 50 ft. from clinic well. Former staff assigned R. Cormack.(rpltr5)

6/24/1988 Release Investigation SI; Shannon & Wilson, Inc. study included installation of 5 monitoring wells to evaluate groundwater quality. No sampling and analysis performed. Well locations include: #1 - Bettles Lodge, #2 - Sourdough Outfitters, #3 - FAA Bldg 603, #4 - upgradient well, and #5 - cross-gradient well. Floating product observed in wells 1 and 3. Conclude that contamination at FAA and Lodge from two different sources. Former Staff
9/1/1988 Release Investigation SI; "Bettles LUST Contamination Laboratory Report" included sampling of 14 potable drinking supplies and 4 monitoring wells, and fingerprinting of oil samples obtained from wells. Two monitoring wells near USTs showed contamination with petroleum hydrocarbons. School and lodge wells did not show contamination. Former Staff
9/12/1988 Long Term Monitoring Established MS; R. Cormack sampled 4 wells installed by Shannon & Wilson, Inc. (did not sample well 2). Well 1 showed 22 ppm petroleum product (appears to be gasoline), and well 3 showed 47 ppm of what appears to be diesel fuel. Also sampled drinking water sources in Bettles. No BTEX were found in these samples. DEC requested tank testing by 12/9/88. Former Staff
