Problems/Comments
In 1989 soil samples collected from nine soil borings identified petroleum contamination at the active gas station site in preparation for the road work scheduled for 1991/1992. A water well search conducted on another site identified drinking water wells to the northwest of the site within 1/4 of a mile. In 1991 a 9,000 gallon unleaded gasoline, a 7,500 gallon leaded gasoline, a 3,000 gallon supreme unleaded, 550 gallon fuel oil, and a 1,000 gallon used oil tank and their associated piping were removed. Three hydraulic lifts and one floor drain were also removed. 1,388 tons of contaminated soil was excavated during the site work. 1,231 tons of the contaminated soil was disposed of at the Anchorage Regional Landfill (ARL) and 157 tons of the contaminated soil was treated at APC, then disposed of at the ARL. After the contaminated soil was excavated all of the excavation samples met default cleanup levels. Later in 1991 for road construction at the intersection of Jewel Lake and Raspberry 15 feet of soil was removed over the entire 150 foot by 150 foot lot. In 1992 847 tons of potentially contaminated soil was excavated during excavations for some utility vaults on the property along Jewel Lake Road and roadwork in Jewel Lake Road near that area. This soil was transported to ASR for processing through their screening plant and additional characterization sampling. After processing the analytical samples collected from the soil met the most stringent cleanup levels, and the 847 tons of soil was approved for reuse at 5701 Katahdin Drive for use as fill. Samples collected from the utility vault excavations met the most stringent cleanup levels. Based on the information provided the contamination from former gas station have been cleaned up to site cleanup levels. A closure letter was issued by ADEC on March 3, 1993.
