Problems/Comments

Two gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) were removed in 1993. Soil and groundwater contamination was found. The report documented up to 150 mg/kg benzene and 12,000 mg/kg GRO in the 140 cubic yards of stockpile soils placed in a lined cell in the former tank excavation. Also up to 9,700 mg/kg GRO and 110 mg/kg benzene was left in the in situ-soils at the edge of the former tank excavation. Groundwater was encountered at 6 to 7 feet below ground surface (bgs) with a silt/clay layer at 9 feet bgs, with additional groundwater expected at 15 feet bgs. Later investigation in the right of way encountered groundwater at 13 feet bgs. Passive VES lines (running to black pipes along the office building to the north of the excavation) were installed in three trenches running east to west. On November 8, 1993 four soil borings (located about 20 to 25 feet away from the former tanks, one each to north, south, east, and west) had field readings collected but not analytical samples. Based on the high field readings the consultant concluded that the contamination extended beyond those borings. The full extent of the soil and groundwater contamination at this site has not been determined. Need to complete release investigation and corrective action at this site. F.K.A.L55.369

11/4/1993 Site Added to Database Former Staff
11/9/1993 Release Investigation RP's consultant installed 4 borings and did some test pits. Area of contamination at least 45 ft by 70 ft to 9 ft+ depth. Full extent of soil and groundwater contamination not determined. Robert Weimer
11/18/1993 Leaking Underground Storage Tank Corrective Action Underway RP installed passive soil vapor extraction system and put 140 cubic yard stockpile in lined cell in the excavation of the former tank. Robert Weimer
10/1/1998 Site Characterization Report Approved In October 1998 Shannon and Wilson conducted an environmental assessment for the Dowling Road upgrade from Old Seward to Lake Otis Parkway. As part of that work one boring/temporary monitoring well (97-17) was installed along the southern edge of the McKinley Fence property. Groundwater was encountered at 13 feet below ground surface. The soil sample collected from the boring was non detect for benzene and GRO, but had detectable tolune and xylenes that were below cleanup levels. The groundwater sample collected had 0.13 mg/l GRO and non detect BTEX. Robert Weimer
10/2/2000 Meeting or Teleconference Held Talked with RP Rich Lindstrom he will send copy of the site assessment report and post closure notice soon. He had thought that all of the contamination had been dug out and put in a lined cell in the former tank excavation. He said that the 3 vent pipes installed still smelled of fuel. Robert Weimer
10/11/2000 Site Characterization Report Approved ADEC receives a copy of the UST closure report dated December 1993, for the UST removal and assessment work conducted in November 1993. 3/22/2001 Update or Other Action ADEC letter to McKinley Fence company regarding a contaminated site file CS100.234 (2100.38.098). Surface contamination was identified in 2000 the the location of soil boring B3MF. 17.39 tons of contaminated soil was removed and thermally treated at ASR. Confirmation soil samples collected from the base and sidewalls of that excavation were non-detect for BTEX and GRO so a closure letter was issued for that location. The ADEC letter noted that the closure letter did not apply to the soil and groundwater contamination associated with the UST systems. Robert Weimer
4/2/2001 Update or Other Action ADEC approves request for an extension until 5/15/01 to submit a release investigation work plan for this site. Robert Weimer
