REM; Alaska Department of Commerce & Economic Development hired Shannon & Wilson to remove 500 gallon waste oil tank, 400 gallon diesel tank, and a 10,000 gallon gasoline tank from the site. 9 soil samples were collected and 7 out of 9 were above DEC cleanup levels. Headspace gas concentrations suggest a volatile source of contamination. Samples at the waste oil tank ranged from 61 - 772 ppm TRPH; diesel tank 601 - 4600 ppm TRPH; gasoline tank had both diesel and gas contamination with diesel in the greatest concentrations: 6 - 6900 ppm and total BTEX ranged from 0.68 - 603 ppm. Samples for halogenated volatiles in the vicinity of the waste oil tank were found to be below detection limits. The water table was encountered at 8.5 - 9 feet below the surface. Excavation halted before PID registered below 100 ppm TPH and the excavated soils were placed back in the holes. A strong hydrocarbon odor was noted at all depths and surface soils were stained to a depth of approximately 1 inch |
