Problems/Comments

Ten underground storage tanks (USTs), installed between 1974 and 1980 were removed and closed at the former Mark Air Hanger facility. Diesel tank UST 9 and waste oil tank, UST 10, failed tank tightness tests in 1992. USTs 5 and 15 were removed and no contamination was encountered in the surrounding soils. Holes were found in USTs 9 and M01. Staining, believed to be associated with overfilling and/or leaks, was associated with USTs 10 and 13. The ten tanks and associated pipes were removed as practicable; some pipes were cut and grouted in place near building edges, or at other structural barriers. Soil investigations indicated diesel range and gasoline range petroleum contamination existed in excess of the applicable ADEC cleanup levels at the former locations of USTs 6, 7, and 10. Soil contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was also encountered in the UST 10 area. Diesel contaminated soil exceeded the applicable cleanup levels in the excavations for USTs 9, 13, and 15. Soil samples collected from the UST 12 and M01 excavations contained benzene concentrations above the ADEC cleanup level. Contamination was not encountered during the excavation of UST 14. Review of the historical groundwater analytical data indicates that the contaminant of concern at MW-1 is benzene. Similarly, benzene and trichloroethene were historically identified at elevated levels in MW-2. Residual range organics were identified at elevated levels in MW-5 and MW-6. Historic aviation gasoline additives, including lead, ethylene dibromide (EDB), and ethylene dichloride (EDC), are also contaminants of concern in the former Mark Air Hanger area. Tank 1 on this property belonged to Tim Magoffin and was assigned a separate facility number (2371). Tank 1 has been closed in the leaking underground storage tank database.
