Problems/Comments

Approximately 50 POL barrels located at the west end of the runway and tar-contaminated soils are located east of the runway. Numerous reports of alleged petroleum and solvent spills that may have contaminated soil, ground and surface waters. The primary health concern is with water contamination, and presence of leaking storage tanks, their contents and condition unknown. A DDT/DDE source is suspected in the area due to low levels of DDE detected. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has conducted creek sediment and fish sampling and suspect a DDT/DDE source in the area. ADEC received a citizen complaint 11/13/90 describing seven sites of possible contamination that includes several dump areas containing drums and debris and possible contaminated drinking water and are presently recognized by the Army Corps of Engineers. Several dumps, particularly along the Northway Road and Moose Creek, area have not been addressed by the Corps. Several homes are built on dumps attributed to military activity during WWII. Extent of contamination appears extensive, extending over several acres. The area of the site includes 12 square miles surrounding the airstrip in a wetlands environment with water table located less than 6' below ground surface. The Corps has scheduled remedial design in FY93. Land ownership in the area is complicated but site appears to be owned by both state and federal agencies. According to the FUDS Site Summary dated 2/21/96, restoration includes a pipeline, several hundred 55 gallon POL drums, above and underground fuel tanks, and mounds of tar contaminated soil. Possible LUST. Possible DERP-FUD - may not be listed yet. EPA ID# AK0690590088 - CERCLIS site. (rpltr4) (rpltr6) Cross reference file 170.38.001 and 170.02.011.
