Problems/Comments
The site is a result of diesel contamination of surface and subsurface soil resulting from overfills to Tank 17-A-1, a 500 gallon UST at RCO Building 401. The highest concentrations (2,500 ppm) were detected approx 1' bgs in a depression a few feet from the tank during an inplace tank assessment conducted in July 1995. Concentrations decreased with depth and a sample below the estimated depth of the tank contained 100 ppm DRO. No BTEX analytes, and only trace GRO were detected in the samples. Approximately one month later, the UST was decommissioned, and potentially contaminated soil was excavated and contained within 24 supersacks located on a liner at the RCO. Sample results at the limits of the excavation are below ADEC cleanup levels and the UST decommissioning assessment recommends no further action.

8/17/1995 | Leaking Underground Storage Tank Release Confirmed - Petroleum | LUST Site created in CSP for source area ID 78495 Diesel and gasoline contaminated soil encountered during closure of regulated UST (FAA Tank No. 17-A-1) tank at the Direction Finder Bldg (Bldg401). LCAU via tank removal and excavation of approx. 32 cyds of soil on 8/17 to 8/19 1995 of contaminated soils and subsequent treatment of them in a biocell on FAA property. Biocell currently still actively remediating as of 11/24/98. Shop - Bldg 200: An UST (regulated status unknown, not registered with DEC) was removed by the FAA in 1990 along the eastern wall of the Shop did not have sampling at time of closing, so an after the fact site assessment was performed utilizing borings. Surface soil contamination related to this tank resulted from a ruptured drum that contained the pumped out contents. Also closed out at the Shop were AST FAA Tank No. 17-B-2 - heating oil tank, and gasoline AST FAA Tank No. 17-B-1. 6/26/2008 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Updated the problem statement, and ranked this site based on file review, and information from FAA. The tank decommissioning report was not submitted, but has been requested from FAA. Site closure can be addressed when the backup documentation arrives. | Kim DeRuyter |
1/12/2010 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 78495 500 gallon UST 17-A-1. The ecological pathway was changed from low potential to incomplete because sample results for the contaminants of concern, gasoline and diesel range organics were all below the migration to groundwater cleanup level and the area impacted was less than 250 square feet. | Kim DeRuyter |
