Problems/Comments

Three 2,500-gallon underground storage tanks (USTs 1-3) were removed in October of 1998. Tanks #1 and #2 held gasoline while Tank #3 held diesel. Excavation extended to 8 feet below ground surface (bgs) and a sheen was observed on the water table. Potentially-impacted soil was temporarily stockpiled. Soil samples were collected at the base of the excavation and the temporary stockpiles for laboratory analysis. Due to cold weather, soil from the excavation was not field screened and returned to excavation. Analytical results indicate gasoline range organics, diesel range organics, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes are contaminants of concern in this source area, although detections were below cleanup levels except for benzene. Additionally, a 300-gallon used oil UST (Tank #4) was removed in September of 2015. Approximately 35 cubic yards of potentially impacted soil were removed during the excavation. Field screening did not indicate the presence of contamination. Soil samples were obtained at the base of the excavation (down to 8 feet bgs) and at the soil water interface (9.8 to 10.4 ft. bgs). Analytical results indicated tetrachloroethylene (PCE) as a contaminant of concern, although detections were below cleanup levels. Information regarding an oil-water separator beneath the shop floor and a soil absorption system (classified a Class V Injection Well) is being tracked under Hazard ID 27082, file no. 102.38.203.

11/22/2006 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other ADEC reviewed Shannon & Wilson's Underground Storage Tank Assessment report for the World Wide Movers site. In July of 2006, a 14' by 26' excavation was completed in the location of the former diesel tank (Tand3) to a maximum depth of 15 feet bgs. Groundwater was encountered at 13 feet bgs. Approximately 175 cubic yards (2006 excavation) and 40 cubic yards (2005 excavation) of contaminated soil were transported to OIT for thermal remediation. MW-1 was installed in the excavation near the location of the former diesel tank. Soil samples taken from the base of the excavation were all non-detect except for one that had 0.0255 ppm benzene. The samples analyzed for PAHs met ADEC cleanup levels. Sample results from the groundwater at MW-1 had DRO at 8.59 ppm DRO, 1.39 ppm GRO and 33.8 ppb benzene. Shannon & Wilson recommends sampling a groundwater sample from MW-1 during the summer of 2007. Deborah Williams
