Problems/Comments

A Dames and Moore UST closure report dated January 1994 describes the removal of 2 USTs and an in place SA for a 25,000 gallon heating oil UST that was in use at the time. The registered USTs were a 3,000 gallon diesel fuel tank and a 6,000 gallon leaded gasoline tank. The tanks were approximately 30 years old and were situated directly beneath two dispensers. The USTs passed a tightness test but were taken out of use. With the exception of the highly oiled soil placed in the 55 gallon drum, soil from the excavation was used as backfill. Analytical samples beneath the tanks contained up to 9,000 mg/kg DRO, 1,100 mg/kg benzene, 3,700 mg/kg toluene, 630 mg/kg ethylbenzene, 3,800 mg/kg xylenes, and 17,000 mg/kg GRO. Dames and Moore went back in March 1994 and advanced eight soil borings surrounding the former USTs to a depth of about 12’. Groundwater was encountered at 10 to 11’ bgs. The borings were sampled at both 5’ and in the groundwater smear zone. Analytical samples from the soil borings indicate only two exceedances, benzene in sample 94BH3-WT taken in the smear zone contained benzene at 0.18 m/kg, and sample 94BH6-5’ contained 260 mg/kg DRO.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
10/11/1993 Leaking Underground Storage Tank Release Confirmed - Petroleum LUST Site created in CSP for source area ID 77457 DEC sends NORL written to Joel Craft, ADOT/PF Western District Office confirming 10/8/93 notification of release during UST removals. Former Staff
10/11/1993 Site Added to Database Former Staff
10/20/1993 Update or Other Action Ltr from Randy Romensko of DEC/Nome D.O. to D & M re-replacing contam soil back into pit. Agreemt w/RP there would be more contam soil than area could stockpile, there was more contam soil that was unexcavated as USTs were "leakers," RP had no funds to remediate soils, and temporary impermeable material would be placed over the excavated site to prevent or minimize amt of ppt that may percolate thru the site. Former Staff
3/9/1999 Underground Storage Tank Site Characterization or Assessment DEC needs to obtain copy of SA rept from RP and proceed with request that ADOT/PF conduct RI/cleanup. Former Staff

11/2/2006 Underground Storage Tank Site Characterization or Assessment Shannon & Wilson contracted to assess contamination remaining at the site. A call from the field indicated that contaminated soil beneath the former dispenser island was limited to about one backhoe bucket of slimy black silt in the groundwater smear zone. A down gradient test pit revealed a thin film of product on the groundwater. A test pit was dug directly down gradient of the old HOT soil appeared to be clean but analytical samples are still at the lab. Kim DeRuyter
12/18/2006 Update or Other Action Met with Mark Lockwood to discuss the preliminary results from the site characterization activities conducted this fall. Two on-site wells, and a down gradient monitoring well were sampled for DRO, GRO, and BTEX; no analytes were detected. Soil results indicate that DRO and benzene were detected at 10' bgs in test pits dug in the former tank location. Soil samples from a down gradient test pit did not detect analytes above the cleanup level. No contamination was detected in a test pit dug near the former heating oil tank. Kim DeRuyter
6/22/2007 Conditional Closure Approved A record of decision documented residual soil contamination remaining on site but no evidence of impacts to groundwater. The soil contamination was determined to be limited in extent and pose no unacceptable risks. The two groundwater wells on site (not used for drinking water) should be periodically sampled. Also - ADEC approval is required for off site transport of soil or groundwater. Jim Frechione
6/22/2007 Institutional Control Record Established ADEC approval is required for off site transport of soil and groundwater from this site. Also - two ground water wells (used for vehicle washing but not drinking water) should be periodically sampled Jim Frechione
9/5/2007 Update or Other Action DEC was contacted by Design Alaska regarding the possible use of groundwater at the site for washing vehicles and then discharging the water off site. They were informed that any new water wells installed on site should be sampled for petroleum hydrocarbons and the results submitted to DEC for review prior to any off site discharge. Jim Frechione
11/18/2008 Update or Other Action ADEC received from Shannon and Wilson the Water Sampling results for the ADOT & PF Nome Maintenance Station and the adjacent residence. Results from the two wells at the ADOT facility and the well at the residence were non detect for all parameters tested (DRO and BTEX) indicating that the groundwater has not been impacted. Tamara Cardona-Marek
12/27/2011 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC received from SLR the 2011 Groundwater Monitoring Report for the ADOT Nome Maintenance Station. Groundwater samples were collected from the maintenance building, materials lab, and Darling residence wells. Samples were analyzed for DRO, BTEX and EDB (one well only). Only toluene was detected in the materials lab well sample at levels well below cleanup (0.0112 mg/L). No other contaminants were detected in any of the other wells. Tamara Cardona-Marek
