Problems/Comments

Gasoline releases were observed surfacing through cracks in the asphalt and concrete pavement area at this gas station in the spring of 1999. Release investigation and corrective action work resulted in the excavation and removal of approximately 5000 cubic yards of heavily contaminated soils. The excavated soils were thermally remediated. Soil and groundwater contamination remained in the Sterling Highway R-O-W and immediately adjacent to, and under, the onsite building. Long-term groundwater quality monitoring and limited indoor air quality sampling is planned at this project site, in order to monitor the concentration of the remaining contamination.

5/29/2008 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued Residual soil and groundwater contamination remains at this property, both onsite, and offsite in adjacent road right-of-ways. COCs = GRO and benzene. Paul Horwath
9/24/2008 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Reviewed and approved a work plan from term contractor SLR Alaska to sample the GW monitoring wells at the site and to decommission GW monitoring well MW-5. Field work to be completed September 26, 2008. Paul Horwath
10/29/2008 Institutional Control Record Established Institutional Controls established and entered into the database. Paul Horwath
12/12/2008 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other ADEC term contractor SLR provided a copy of their December 2008 Former Trailside General Store Ground Water Sampling Report, Homer, Alaska. Groundwater sampling was conducted on 9/28/08, and water samples were analyzed for BTEX and GRO. Groundwater collected from MW-4 and from the groundwater interceptor and diversion system collector tank exceeded ADEC groundwater cleanup level of 0.005 mg/L. Of greatest significance was the concentration of benzene reported in the collector tank at 0.102 mg/L. This indicates that the residual contaminated soils in the Sterling Highway R-O-W that could not be removed by excavation have leached sufficient contamination to have migrated in groundwater through the clean excavation backfill soils and impact GW quality being collected in the groundwater interceptor and diversion system collection piping. ADEC should re-sample the water in the collector tank and determine if the benzene concentration is again reported at these elevated concentrations. Prior concentrations were near non-detect, so this elevated benzene concentration is significant. Paul Horwath
12/28/2010 Site Characterization Report Approved Term contractor SLR's 2010 Ground Water Monitoring Report, dated November 2010 was reviewed. GW samples were collected in May 2010. Groundwater quality in the 5 MWs sampled met ADEC GW cleanup levels. Groundwater in the 1000-gallon buried steel tank exceeded ADEC groundwater cleanup levels for benzene, being detected at 40.6 and 31.7 ug/L (parent and field duplicate samples). Paul Horwath
12/29/2010 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 77785 Former USTs. Paul Horwath
10/31/2011 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Adminstrative action - updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 77785 Former USTs. Evonne Reese
3/23/2012 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 77785 Former USTs. Paul Horwath
7/30/2012 Update or Other Action The groundwater monitoring wells and the 1000-gallon tank were sampled June 12, 2012. Benzene was detected in the 1000-gallon tank at 44 ug/L and 34 ug/L in the parent sample and field duplicate sample, respectively. No groundwater cleanup levels were exceeded in any of the groundwater monitoring wells. Paul Horwath
6/27/2013 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Received and reviewed the May 2013 Groundwater Sampling Report prepared by ADEC Term Contractor Shannon & Wilson. Benzene was not detected in the water samples collected from 1000-gallon sampling tank, which is a significant improvement in water quality, compared to the past three (3) sampling events which were performed in 2008, 2011, and 2012. The water quality in the five (5) remaining groundwater monitoring wells remains similar to, and consistent with, prior years. Fuel contamination is not being detected in the monitoring wells located downslope (down-gradient) of the building. The cleanup work performed at this site has likely prevented groundwater contamination from migrating down gradient to adjacent properties. Another groundwater sampling event is scheduled to be performed in 2014. Paul Horwath
11/6/2014 Institutional Control Update Current project manager chooses to retain management of the site at this time. Kristin Thompson
1/26/2016 Update or Other Action Attach closure decision documents and related documents to this database for public access and review. Paul Horwath
9/15/2016 Update or Other Action At this time, the current project manager chooses to retain management of this site which has institutional controls. IC Unit
