Problems/Comments
A 4,000-gallon diesel underground storage tank (UST) and two 4,000-gallon gasoline USTs were closed by removal; 50 cubic yards of material impacted by gasoline range organics (GRO), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), and diesel range organics (DRO) were recovered and stockpiled on-site. Pump islands and piping were left in place with no residual contamination volume estimated. Samples under dispenser pump islands were collected at depths of one (8,700 parts per million [ppm] DRO) and three (9,100 ppm DRO) feet below ground surface.
Action Information

---|---|---|---|
8/5/1999 | Leaking Underground Storage Tank Release Confirmed - Petroleum | LUST Site created in CSP for source area ID 77624 (Added by System) | Former Staff |
8/5/1999 | Leaking Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Initiated - Petroleum | Former Staff | |
8/5/1999 | Site Added to Database | Former Staff | |
4/30/2002 | Update or Other Action | No report by consultant, ENSR. Tribe is in negotiation to sell facility to Petro Marine. | Mike Jaynes |
8/5/2002 | Update or Other Action | Project manager changed to Wanstall from Jaynes. File review for site visit. DB updating and site risk ranking evaluation. | Bruce Wanstall |
8/8/2002 | Site Visit | Site inspection and stockpile on Klawock Island for 50 cubic yards transported from the UST closure site. Klawock Heenya RP granted access for site visit but was not available to answer questions at the time of the visit. | Bruce Wanstall |
4/15/2005 | Update or Other Action | Tracking 50 cubic yards of petroleum contaminated soil transported from the UST closure site to Klawock Island; property use has changed; site is adjacent to recreational fishing Klawock Lake. | Bruce Wanstall |
7/13/2006 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Draft letter requesting CAP; contact Responsible Party by phone; send letter by regular and email with copy of the UST Site Assessment. | Bruce Wanstall |
10/4/2006 | Update or Other Action | Cleanup workplan received 9-25-06 was reviewed and is approved by the ADEC. | Bruce Wanstall |
11/27/2006 | Update or Other Action | Investigation status check. Contact made with Klawock Heenya Corporation; cleanup & sampling has occurred; report from consultant is pending. Review of 1999 Site Assessment shows that the highest concentration of residual contaminated material detected was under the pump islands where the product piping was abandoned in-place and dispenser island left was left intact; volume was not estimated. | Bruce Wanstall |
2/12/2007 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ranking based on 1999 SA Data | Bruce Wanstall |
2/15/2007 | Site Visit | Travel to and inspected the property perimeter at Klawock Lake and former pump island now used as retail outlet. | Bruce Wanstall |
3/9/2007 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | The pathways evaluated at this site included human health exposure pathways of inhalation, direct contact and ingestion. The contaminant concentrations did not exceed the human health risk levels established for these pathways and all soil contamination was ultimately removed or treated to non-detect levels. The migration to ground and surface water pathways were evaluated. The benzene and DRO concentrations (following excavation) did not exceed 18 AAC 75.341, Table B1 and B2 cleanup levels for migration to groundwater. The contaminated soil that was excavated was transported off site. Therefore, no risk to ground or surface water quality remained. | Bruce Wanstall |
3/9/2007 | Site Closure Approved | The source(s) of contamination on the KDF facility site were removed from the site. The site assessment information has documented that soil and/or groundwater does not appear to be impacted above established cleanup levels. As a result, ADEC will not require any further cleanup actions and the site is approved for closure status. | Bruce Wanstall |
