Problems/Comments
In January 2003 there was a discharge of heating fuel from an aboveground tank at this residence. The oil was discharged from a fitting on a newly installed tank and pump system used to feed a monitor stove on the second floor of the building. The leaking oil sprayed over the side of the house. The first floor apartment had a strong odor of oil upon arrival. An unknown quantity of oil flowed down slope penetrating the ground and with some oil eventually making its way into the marine waters of Auke Bay via a corrugated metal pipe culvert under a drive way. The area has been treated on and off for five years. The contaminated area near the house has been substantially reduced but this is attributed to leaking sewage at the house. The septic tank had collapsed some time prior to the spill and sewage leaked into the spill area near the house. The area down slope still has petroleum contamination remaining. This site was last tested by an environmental consultant in May 2007. Again, while the upper part of the area met state cleanup standards the lower end of the site, based on field screen of the soil, was still contaminated. This case is transferred to the Contaminated Sites Program due to its age, lack of progress, possible need for continued remediation and tracking.
