Problems/Comments
The FAA Big Delta Station Building 603 was the former Generator Facility for the FAA station. There are three source areas at this site. There is the former above ground storage tank (AST) 6-A-002; the former underground storage tanks (USTs) 6-D-001 and 6-D-004; and the northern side of the crawlspace. 12/4/2009 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program has completed a review of the environmental records associated with the FAA Big Delta Facility which includes Regulated Tanks at the RCAG and VORTAC facilities, the Fuel Transfer Station, Building 601, Building 603, Building 604, Building 400, and two areas identified as Tar and Debris sites. Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and this site will be closed. | Tana Robert |

7/23/2015 | Update or Other Action | DEC issued a determination to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding the maintenance of closure conditions at four contaminated sites at the Big Delta FAA Station. Following correspondence with the US Army, the landowner of the sites, it was determined that the FAA Big Delta sites had been integrated into the Ft. Greely Land Management System, and that the land management system’s protocols ensured that the closure conditions at the FAA Big Delta sites would be maintained. Therefore, The US Army has demonstrated to the Department’s satisfaction that processes are in place that ensures future site users that the residual contamination is defined on planning maps and will be taken into consideration when any future construction projects in the area are planned. This determination will be attached to the DEC Contaminated Sites Program Database site entries. | Monte Garroutte |
Contaminant Information
Name | Level Description | Media | Comments |
---|---|---|---|
DRO | Other | Soil | DRO contamination is present between 50 and 70 feet below ground surface (bgs). Soil samples collected from the soil borings had levels of DRO up to 11,000 mg/kg at 54 feet bgs. In all the soil borings, contamination decreased to below ADEC cleanup levels at 75 to 80 feet bgs. Due to the potential presence of petroleum contaminated soil above the migration to groundwater pathway cleanup level for DRO (250 mg/kg), the landowner (US Army Fort Greely) will record the area of residual contamination in the Property Management System and Master Land Use Plan in accordance with 18 AAC 75.375 (b)(4), and notify DEC if the current land uses changes. |
