Problems/Comments
In FY92, a SI was conducted and observed a 515-gallon heating oil UST (32-D-003) at Building 102, located near the east side of the former Utility Building 600, and recommended that the UST be investigated for compliance with regulatory standards. In FY97, the UST was decommissioned, and 26 cu. yds of contaminated soil were excavated, temporarily stockpiled, and transported to ESI in Fairbanks, Alaska for thermal treatment. Upon tank and soil removal, perched groundwater was encountered at approximately 4.5 feet bgs. Confirmation samples collected during decommissioning activities at the bottom of the excavation site exceeded ADEC levels for DRO (16 mg/kg to 2,700 mg/kg). Fuel-contaminated soil was visible at the interface of the frozen and thawed soil at the excavation site, and a release investigation was recommended to further characterize the contamination.
The 2006 Site Investigation placed three additional soil borings and obtained six samples for analysis, all results were below 250 mg/kg DRO.
