Problems/Comments

Big Lake is located in Holy Cross adjacent to the City Shop at the corner of Cross Road and Big Lake Road which is the road that goes to the landfill. Big Lake was used as a dumping ground for 20 years or more. A sawmill was located there in the 1960s and when it broke down it was shoved into the lake. Refuse is estimated to include vehicles, motors, batteries, and general household garbage. A shop building located north of the lake (City Shop)(see attached photo) has fuel and hazardous substances and a "distinctive diesel smell." The community is concerned that the contamination in the lake could damage their subsistence fishing resources and water quality of surrounding sloughs and rivers. Big Lake was once a recreation area, used for swimming, fishing, and trapping; it is currently used for canoe races in the summer and a spring ice-picking contest.

7/16/2009 Update or Other Action DEC had SLR complete an Environmental Management Plan for the Big Lake Former Dump Site which included Big Lake and the City Shop. On May 13 and 14, 2009, SLR traveled to Holy Cross to assess the conditions to better evaluate potential environmental concerns. After the field visit, SLR concluded that there was solid waste in Big Lake but in order to determine if there is an environmental concern, they recommended that an assessment would be the first step. They recommended conducting surface water and sediment sampling to determine if the lake has been impacted and a bathymetric and debris survey to determine the type and magnitude of the debris in the lake. The City Shop had miscellaneous stains and contamination around the property. SLR recommends the excavation of approximately 35 cubic yards of contaminated soil. Deborah Williams
