Problems/Comments
Two USTs were removed May 16, 2008: a regulated 3,000 gal. diesel and a unregulated 300 gal. HOT from the same excavation. Corrosion holes were noted on the 300 gal. HOT. Fifteen cubic yards of contaminated soil was removed from the excavation and transported to Waste Management’s Columbia Ridge Disposal facility in Arlington, Oregon on July 9, 2008. Groundwater was not encountered. Six soil samples collected from the excavation limits at 8 ft. bgs contained DRO up to 7.4 mg/kg, toluene up to 0.017 mg/kg, ethylbenzene up to 0.011 mg/kg, and xylenes up to 0.039 mg/kg. A soil sample collected near tank(s) piping at 18 inches bgs contained 118 mg/kg DRO. The contamination source appears to be from the leaky 300 gal. HOT, however due to proximity of both USTs, contamination could be attributed to both.

The BTEX analysis for confirmation soil samples 2A(CL02), 3A(CL03), and 6A(CL06) were collected in non-septa jars and are therefore considered bias low. Stockpile soil samples were analyzed for DRO only, due to lack of MeOH preservation. | Grant Lidren |
5/1/2009 | Cleanup Complete Determination Issued | The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC), Contaminated Sites Program, has completed a review of the environmental records associated with the Douglas Island Center Building. Based on the information provided to date, the ADEC has determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment, and this site is closed. | Grant Lidren |
