Problems/Comments
On May 7th, 1998, a non-regulated heating oil tank (tank #7) was decommissioned at the residence. Contaminated soil was found near the east end of the tank at a depth of two feet below ground surface (BGS) extending down to a layer of clay or silt near the bottom of the pit. The excavation measured six feet by twelve feet (72squarefeet) and a depth of six feet BGS. Two analytical samples were collected from a location corresponding with the pipe trench based on field screen readings. An estimated volume of two cubic yards of contamination appeared in an area associated with the fuel supply and return lines and was placed between liners on-site. Groundwater was not encountered in the excavation. There is a public utility water line nearby and reportedly a drinking water well located near the site. NPS and DEC staff determined that additional excavation was impracticable. The fuel supply lines were capped and the excavation was backfilled with clean soil. The tank appeared to be in good condition. The volume of remaining contamination was not estimated.
