Problems/Comments
EPA contacted DEC to verify information available in their Underground Injection Control (UIC)database regarding the existence of floor drains (potential UICs) at the property on 272 Ilinois Street. DEC contacted the landowner, the Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC), requesting additional information. ARRC hired Nortech to conduct a limited investigation of the floor drains located in the old ADOT maintenance shop building located at the former OK Lumber property (building North of the OK Lumber main store). The investigation discovered several plugged floor drains. A camera was introduced into one drain but after 65 feet, no conclusion was made. It is suspected they are connected to the sewer or storm drain to a lift station nearby. However, the building was built in the 1930s and sewer lines are estimated to have been installed in this area in the 1960s. The landowner is advised that the next lessee should be informed of the presence of these drains and, if the building is demolished at any time, additional investigation will be needed. EPA concurred with these actions.
