Problems/Comments
Markair Lot 1 Block 3, Nome Airport, has been in operation since World War II. Various equipment, aboveground storage tanks (ASTs), underground storage tanks (USTs), drums, planes, helicopters, and a building, have occupied the site past and present. A Phase II Environmental Assessment (EA) was completed by Restoration Science and Engineering in July 1997 for the MarkAir Bankruptcy Trustee. The Phase II EA revealed two main areas of concern: the 500-gallon heating oil AST and the area where the Jet A fuel cabinet and Jet A AST were located. The AST adjacent to the Jet A fuel cabinet was observed to be leaking from one of the connections. Soil samples collected at depths of 1-1.5 feet indicated gasoline range (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), and benzene contamination above cleanup levels. This site was originally tracked under the MarkAir - Nome site in the Contaminated Sites (CS) database (Hazard ID 2940, File Number 400.38.005).
