Problems/Comments
During a 2001 site assessment, soil staining was noted below the valve of a 500 gallon diesel, unfenced, day AST located adjacent to the church building. This area is commonly used to access the church entry from the end of the boardwalk. Soil samples collected from two sample points near the AST at 1.5 ft. bgs and 0.5 ft. bgs contained DRO up to 2,860 mg/kg. RRO was detected below cleanup levels.

4/9/2002 | Update or Other Action | The Village of Nightmute Site Assessment Project Report, dated April 9, 2002 was received by the DEC and consisted of six environmental site assessments (ESAs) performed at six bulk fuel storage facilities, respectively, in Nightmute, Alaska. The Nightmute Catholic Church Tank Farm consisted of two horizontal above ground storage tanks (ASTs); one with a 500 gallon capacity and the other with a 1,000 gallon capacity. The 1,000-gallon AST was located adjacent to the eastern wall of the church; the 500 gallon AST was located adjacent to the southern wall of the church. Both of the ASTs were utilized for the storage of heating oil. The tanks were reportedly welded steel construction and were placed atop timbers directly on the ground. The tank farm was unlined with no secondary containment. Staining was identified surrounding the western portion of the 500-gallon AST. Three surface soil samples were collected from two location within the stained area; two samples at 0.5 foot bgs and one from 1.5 feet bgs. An additional soil sample was collected at 1 foot bgs near the southern end of the 1,000-gallon AST. All of the soil samples were analyzed for diesel range organics (DRO), residual range organics (RRO), and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Concentrations of DRO up to 2,860 milligrams per kilogram (mg/Kg) were detected above method two migration to groundwater cleanup levels in the stained area near the 500-gallon AST. All other analytes were not detected above the most stringent cleanup levels. | Joshua Barsis |

4/10/2013 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | PM spoke with spoke with several village officials about their interest in sampling contaminated sites during a site visit planned for June 2013. Point-of-contacts include Mayor Mary Matthias (647-6216), Tribal Council Member (Ignatius Tuluk; 647-6215), and City Administrator (Mark Tuluk; 647-6426). Nightmute owns a backhoe, but it's been broken for at least 10 years. Mr. Ignatius Tuluk indicated the land surrounding the church is marshy. Nightmute seems to have no money to pay lab fees, so it may be possible to get church volunteers to help excavate contamination near entryway. | Richard Bernhardt |
