Problems/Comments

Soil samples collected from the gravel pad at this exploration site in 2000 contained DRO up to 595 mg/kg and stained areas were noted on the pad during a site visit in 2000.

4/8/2009 Site Added to Database A new site has been added to the database Mitzi Read
4/9/2009 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 78752 name: Historic diesel contamination Bill O'Connell
4/10/2009 Site Characterization Workplan Approved Received Phase II Site Assessment Work Plan Beechey Point State 1 & 2. There are two pads at this site, a main gravel pad and a smaller camp pad. The majority of the pad areas are near tundra grade, moderately thermokarsted, and supporting vegetation. Two wells were drilled a this site, both were P&A’d in 1970. The primary background investigation at this site occurred in 2000 with a CO2 survey, visual observation, and discrete soil and surface water sample collection. Soil samples collected in 2000 contained DRO up to 595 mg/kg and staining and hydrocarbon sheen were noted in several areas. The 2009 investigation will include sampling 25 boreholes on the pads, 5 boreholes in the tundra and additional boreholes in the reserve pit and flare pit. Samples will be analyzed for DRO/RRO with about 25% of the samples also analyzed for BTEX. Additional site inspection will occur later in 2009. Bill O'Connell

11/8/2010 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed Beechey Point State 1 & 2 Phase II Site Assessment and Corrective Action Plan. Boreholes were driven and sampled at the two gravel pads, the Camp Pad and the Drill Pad, and also in the flare pit and surrounding tundra. 11 boreholes were driven at the Camp Pad, which is approximately 2-3 feet thick. DRO was detected up to 774 mg/kg and GRO was detected up to 486 mg/kg in the same sample, the only one at Camp Pad that exceeded cleanup levels. 14 boreholes were driven at the Drill Pad. DRO was detected up to 26,700 mg/kg and GRO was detected up to 1,480 mg/kg. DRO was detected at 2,670 mg/kg and GRO was detected at 753 mg/kg in the flare pit sample from 0.6-1.1 feet bgs, however the sample from 2.4 feet bgs did not contain detectable concentrations of contaminants. Samples from potentially impacted areas of tundra also did not contain detectable concentrations of contaminants. Corrective action at the site will include removal of the entire Drill Pad, removal of drilling waste and capping of the reserve pit, and the removal of impacted tundra. The Camp Pad will not be removed as contamination is minimal and the area already has healthy vegetation. Approximately 200 cy of restricted use gravel from the Drill Pad will be used to backfill the reserve pit and restricted use and contaminated gravel will be hauled to East Dock landfarm for treatment. Confirmation samples will be collected from the bottom and sidewalls following excavation. If stockpiles of gravel are created during the project, they will be sampled to determine reuse. Clean gravel will be used onsite as backfill as needed. Bill O'Connell
5/1/2012 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed Beechey Point State #1 and #2 Corrective Action Report. The site consisted of a gravel drill pad, reserve pit, potential flare pit, and a gravel camp pad. The camp pad was largely revegetated and hydrocarbon contamination was identified in one discreet subsurface location so no corrective action was conducted at the camp pad. The drill pad was entirely removed and waste was excavated from the reserve pit and flare pit. Approximately 1,195 cubic yards of contaminated gravel and tundra were removed from the main pad and hauled to East Dock landfarm for treatment. Impacted material from the reserve pit and flare pit were excavated and disposed of at the Grind and Inject Facility. Confirmation soil samples were collected from the floors and sidewalls of excavations where hydrocarbon impacted material had been removed. Samples collected from the former gravel pad area contained DRO up to 40.4 mg/kg. Samples collected from the former flare pit did not contain detectable concentrations of DRO. Excavated areas were backfilled to tundra grade with gravel, then topped with organic overburden to promote rehabilitation of the site. Excavations one foot deep or less were backfilled entirely with overburden. Bill O'Connell
5/3/2012 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 78752 Historic diesel contamination. Bill O'Connell
5/25/2012 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Contaminated Sites Program (ADEC) has completed a review of the environmental records associated with BPX Beechey Point State 1 & 2 located in the Greater Prudhoe Bay Area approximately 2.75 miles northwest of S Pad west of the Kuparuk River. Based on the information provided to date, it has been determined that the contaminant concentrations remaining on site do not pose an unacceptable risk to human health or the environment and this site will be closed.
