Problems/Comments
Until 1996, ADOT&PF operated the (old) snow removal equipment building (SREB) in Savoonga; approximately 0.3 mile N/NE of the airport runway. The building is now occupied by the local tribal government or Indian Reorganization Act (IRA) Council for storage, maintenance, and fueling of heavy equipment. The unheated building has a gravel floor with numerous stained areas and a 300-gallon aboveground storage tank used for fueling equipment. In June, 2009, DRO and RRO above cleanup levels were found in surface soil samples. Approximately 242 cubic yards of contaminated soil was removed in 2009 and incorporated into the Savoonga Airport runway/apron. Petroleum contamination remained at excavation limits. A new ADOT&PF SREB has since been constructed closer to the airport runway.
