Problems/Comments
During the removal of one 5,000-gallon diesel, and one 5,000-gallon gasoline underground storage tanks (USTs) on August 24 through August 26, 2009, Benzo(a)pyrene soil contamination was encountered at approximatley 10 feet below ground surface in the east sidewall of the diesel UST excavation, and diesel range organic (DRO) soil contamination was encounterd in the area of the dispenser island that was located on top of the UST systems. Approximately 90 cubic yards of contaminated soil was excavated and transported to the City of Valdez Bailer Facility for disposal. An additional 150 cubic yards of clean soil was excavated during the removal of the UST systems, and returned to the excavation with an additional 120 cubic yards of imported clean fill material. Groundwater was not encountered during the tank removals.
