Problems/Comments

During a geotechnical study performed by Shannon and Wilson in 2008 to develop geotechnical design recommendations for new foundations for the main university building and the library, seven borings were drilled and samples collected. Soil borings were screened with a photo ionization detector (PID) and laboratory confirmation samples collected from areas with highest PID. Potential surface soil contamination based on PID reading within the parking lot area. Select samples were analyzed for gasoline range (GRO), diesel range (DRO), and residual range organics (RRO), and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX). RRO ranged from 961 to 3,390 parts per million (ppm). DRO concentrations ranged from 98.7 to 1,140 ppm. GRO and BTEX were below DEC cleanup levels. Highest contamination was found at a depth of 5 to 6.5 feet. Total depth of borings was between 35 and 75 feet below ground surface. Permafrost estimated at approximately 9 to 50 feet. Water table after boring completion reported as 40 to 50 feet. No groundwater was encountered on boring that was 35 feet deep.
