Problems/Comments
Sources at this site include two UIC wells, surface stains, and sandblasting debris. Soil contamination associated with a dry well indicates potential groundwater (GW) contamination, however samples collected from well MWE15 during the ARRC RI did not contain contaminants above cleanup levels, therefore additional groundwater monitoring is not warranted.

3/1/2010 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Reviewed Site Remediation Report for 2132 North Post Road. Multiple potential source areas are present at the site including the Northern Warehouse Dry Well, the Northern Canopy Wet Well, areas of stained surface soil, areas of sand blasting sediment, and two subsurface concrete vaults in the Southern Warehouse. The dry well, wet well, and potentially the concrete vaults are considered Class V injection wells requiring EPA closure. At the Warehouse Drywell, a sample of drywell sludge contained DRO, RRO, and chromium at concentrations above DEC cleanup levels. The sludge was removed by a vac truck and disposed of with Emerald Services. A soil boring advanced into the drywell contained DRO up to 2,590 mg/kg at 7-9 feet bgs at the groundwater interface. Two additional borings advanced in an area inferred to be downgradient did not contain contaminants above cleanup levels. The Northern Canopy Wet Well was so-named due to the presence of liquids inside the shallow well. A sediment sample contained DRO and RRO above DEC cleanup levels and was removed with a vac truck. A soil sample collected from a borehole adjacent the well at 7-9 feet bgs did not contain contaminants above cleanup levels. Stained soil areas were designated Areas A, B, and C. At Area A, stained soil was excavated to approximately 2 feet bgs over an area of approximately 357 square feet. Confirmation samples collected after excavation at Area A did not contain contaminants above cleanup levels. At Area B, stained soil was excavated to approximately 4 feet bgs over an area of approximately 646 square feet. Confirmation samples collected after excavation at Area B contained DRO up to 548 mg/kg. At Area C, stained soil was excavated to approximately 2 feet bgs over an area of approximately 288 square feet. Confirmation samples collected after excavation at Area C did not contain contaminants above cleanup levels. Total volume of excavated soil is approximately 140 cy. Stained soil was drummed and transported to ASR for thermal remediation. At the various areas of sand blasting sediment, excavation removed approximately 48 yards of material that was characterized and disposed of at Anchorage Regional Landfill. Confirmation samples collected after sand blasting sediments were removed did not contain contaminants above DEC cleanup levels. The concrete vaults in the Southern Warehouse appear to be a former oil/water separator and contained liquids contaminated with diesel fuel. Approximately 695 gallons of liquid were removed from the vaults and disposed of with Emerald Services. The vaults appeared to be sealed, so soil samples were not collected in this area | Bill O'Connell |
