Problems/Comments

UST #449 was identified in a reiview of records in 2010. The size of the tank was reported in different documents as 8,000 and 10,000 gallons and was reportedly used as a diesel fuel source for a generator and a boiler. In 1991 the tank was removed and six soil samples were taken, four of which indicated DRO contamination ranging from 200mg/kg and 8,400 mg/kg (Pollution Incident Report, July 1991). ADEC recommended additional characterization when the adjacent building 1501 was demolished, however when the demolition report was sumbitted no additional sampling was included.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
9/16/2010 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Received 2010 Work Plan addendum for additional characterization at the GRTS Administrative area. Work plan addressed agreed to sampling and investigation to complete characterization of UST # 450/451 and UST #000. A third UST site #449 was included in the investigation at the request of ADEC. This work should address ADEC site characterization requirements for all three remaining LUST sites at the GRTS. Submitted work plan approval letter with minimal comments. Guy Warren
9/22/2010 Leaking Underground Storage Tank Release Confirmed - Petroleum LUST site created in CSP database for source area Dual Purpose UST #449, 78954 Mitzi Read
9/22/2010 Site Added to Database A new site has been added to the database Mitzi Read
9/24/2010 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 78954 name: Dual Purpose UST #449 Meghan Dooley
7/21/2011 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Received final assessment report “Investigation of Abandoned Underground Storage Tank Sites in the Administrative Area” for the Gerstle River Test Site, AK. The report identifies the extent of petroleum contamination at three UST sites (#000, #450/451, and #499). At former UST #449 DRO and PAH soil contamination, above migration to groundwater cleanup levels, extendsfrom 20 to greater than 45ft below ground surface. Groundwater at this site is over 400 ft BGS and exposure to contamination is likely only during excavation activities that extend beneath 20 ft. The report recommends site closure with institutional controls to prevent unintended excavation of contaminated media. A decision document will be prepared to document the decision and identify appropriate IC’s for implementation. Guy Warren
5/14/2014 Leaking Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Initiated - Petroleum Administrative action addition for grant reporting purposes. Evonne Reese
5/15/2014 Cleanup Complete Determination Issued Submit Closure Determination to US Army for GRTS Administrative Areas UST site # 449. The UST was removed from these sites in the mid 1990’s. Site assessment work during the tank removals and subsequent release investigation work have documented some residual petroleum in soil at the site. Because groundwater at the sites is located over 400 feet below the ground surface, migration of contaminants from soil to the groundwater is not a pathway of concern. Therefore, the approved cleanup levels for GRTS UST sites are the most stringent of the soil direct contact, ingestion or inhalation cleanup levels established in 18 AAC 75.341 (d), Table B1 and B2. The site investigations show that soil at this site meets the approved cleanup levels. Guy Warren
9/4/2014 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking A new updated ranking with ETM has been completed for source area 78954 UST #449. Guy Warren
