Problems/Comments
Last Updated: January 2022 The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Utility Building 300 is located near the FAA very high frequency omni-directional range (VOR) facility in Dillingham, Alaska, approximately 3.5 miles south/southwest of the Dillingham Airport. Building 300 is currently used for equipment maintenance and supply storage. The building had two floor drains (injection wells) that discharged directly to the soil beneath the concrete slab floor. In 2010, the injection wells were decommissioned. Analytical samples taken from approximately one foot below the bottom of each floor drain indicated that arsenic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) remained above ADEC cleanup levels. On March 3, 2011, US EPA Region 10 gave FAA a conditional approval for the permanent closure of the two floor drains (injection wells) in Building 300. EPA advised FAA to continue working with ADEC to address the arsenic and PAH exceedances, as well as any other contamination found below the building when it is decommissioned in the future. Additionally, EPA advised FAA to work the ADEC to evaluate groundwater contamination concerns at the site. July 2020- WP submitted and approved for soil and GW sampling, and installation of one MW. As of 01/2022 the field work has no occurred due to COVID.

---|---|---|---|
7/16/2010 | Site Characterization Workplan Approved | Approved work plan to sample the soil stockpile near VORTAC facility using multi-incremental sampling and to sample and decommission 2 floor drains in Utility Building 300. | Melody Debenham |
2/17/2011 | Site Added to Database | A new site has been added to the database | Mitzi Read |
2/18/2011 | Site Characterization Report Approved | Approved the Final Site Investigation Summary Report for Soil Stockpile and Utility Building Floor Drains, FAA Dillingham. The contractor decommissioned two floor drains in Utility Building 300. Arsenic and 2 polunuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds were detected above cleanup levels in the soil below the floor drains. Additional PAHs had elevated detection limits above the cleanup levels. Although no volatile organic compounds were detected, many had elevated detection limits above the cleanup levels. Gasoline, diesel, and residual range organics, and PCB results were below cleanup levels. | Melody Debenham |
2/18/2011 | Conceptual Site Model Submitted | A conceptual site model (CSM) for the FAA Dillingham facility was submitted as part of the Final Site Investigation Summary Report dated December 2010. The potentially complete pathways identified in the CSM are groundwater ingestion and soil ingestion/dermal contact. | Melody Debenham |
2/18/2011 | Exposure Tracking Model Ranking | Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 79045 name: FAA Dillingham Utility Bldg 300 | Melody Debenham |
