Diesel range organics were detected up to 3,420 mg/kg in samples collected from the gravel pad in 2001. Soil contamination is attributed to releases during oil exploration activities.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
4/21/2011 Site Added to Database A new site has been added to the database Mitzi Read
4/25/2011 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Investigation conducted at the site in 2001 found DRO up to 3,420 mg/kg in gravel pad samples from near the former well. Corrective action was conducted in 2003 and 2004 and included removal of the entire gravel pad to tundra grade. Contaminated gravel was hauled to the Drill Site 4 Grind and Inject facility for disposal. Confirmation samples were not collected. Bill O'Connell
4/25/2011 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Due to the difficulty in rehabilitating this site, CPAI is proposing to conduct soil sampling in 2011 to document any remaining contaminant concentrations at the site. Bill O'Connell
4/25/2011 Exposure Tracking Model Ranking Initial ranking with ETM completed for source area id: 79078 name: ConocoPhillips West Sak 16 Bill O'Connell
7/13/2011 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed work plan for 2011 sampling at West Sak 16. A visual inspection will be conducted at the former pad, ten soil samples will be collected from areas previously identified as potentially impacted by ABR, sheen testing will be conducted, and surface water samples will be collected. Bill O'Connell
10/11/2011 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed West Sak 16 Sampling Report. Surface water samples were collected at two locations, surface soil samples were collected from 2 depths at 16 discrete locations for a total of 32 primary samples, and shovel sheen testing and visual inspections were conducted. Contaminants were not detected in surface water samples. Soil samples contained DRO indicative of hydrocarbon contamination at three sample locations at concentrations up to 12,300 mg/kg after silica gel cleanup. Sheen was noted after shovel sheen testing in several locations, particularly near sample location –006. Bill O'Connell
12/23/2011 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other Reviewed West Sak 16 Corrective Action Plan. At the former gravel pad, the remaining hotspots identified during 2011 sampling will be excavated, with approximately 815 cy of material excavated from each location to a depth of 1.5 feet below tundra grade (btg). Additional excavation if necessary will be guided by field screening but will not exceed 3 feet btg without ADEC approval. Due to the presence of salt which is inhibiting revegetation of the site, a 10-inch lift of mineral soil will be placed over the entire former gravel pad footprint followed by one foot of organic overburden. Additional material will be added as needed to minimize ponding of surface water near the wellhead or reserve pit cap. At the former flare pit and reserve pit, salt impacted overburden will be removed and replaced with mineral soil and organic overburden to facilitate revegetation. The project is tentatively scheduled for February 2012. Bill O'Connell
4/6/2012 Update or Other Action Notification received from CPAI that, due to the harsh winter on the slope, the West Sak 16 corrective action has been postponed until 2013. Bill O'Connell
