Problems/Comments

The subject property is located on a hill at 30 feet elevation above the community of Pilot Station. It is defined as US Survey No. 4489 Tract C, Lot 3. The abandoned well pump station is along an ATV trail providing a little-used path from the community to the runway. The site is a 2 minute walk from community residences on the well established trail. The site features the abandoned water tank and unvegetated areas where the generator and fuel tank were positioned. A Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment was conducted by Chilkat Environmental for the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council Brownfields Tribal Response Program to investigate impacts from an abandoned well pump station. The assessment was conducted August 31 and September 1, 2009. The generator was used to power a pump that extracted groundwater for storage in the tank. The facility was installed in the 1970's and was used through the 1980's when another source of groundwater was used to meet the community's growing needs. The facility consisted of an estimated 5,000-gallon diesel tank in an earthen containment berm, a shed containing the generator and well pump, and the water tank. In 1997 the generator, well pump and fuel tank were removed from the site. The site was investigated using common field screening methods. Two areas were identified that are contaminated with suspected heavy oils and diesel. The site of the former generator presented an area estimated at 65 square feet (volume of less than 10 cubic yards of contaminated soil) and the site of the fuel tank containment berm presented an area estimated at 150 square feet (a volume of over 10 cubic yards of contaminated soil).
