Problems/Comments
Nortech Environmental Engineering, Health & Safety Consultants complete an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the Former South-Bank Dumpsite in Alakanuk, Alaska. This EMP was completed on January 14, 2011 for the Yukon River Inter-Tribal Watershed Council.
The Dumpsite is reported to have been created during construction of the existing school building in the early to mid-1970s. At that time, the Dumpsite was at least 75 feet from Alakanuk Pass, but active erosion has moved the bank to that the Dumpsite is now protruding several feet into Alakanuk Pass. At this time, the Dumpsite is visible along approximately 80 feet of the bank. The Dumpsite is a physical hazard to boaters and others that use this portion of the bank for recreational and subsitence purposes. The community is concerned about both the erosion of the visible solid waste and the release of potentially hazardous materials less than one-quarter mile above the City of Alakanuk Water System intake in Alakanuk Pass. Materials observed on the exposed bank consist of plastic, wood, and metal debris that appears consistent with packaging and waste construction materials.
