Problems/Comments

On 6/3/2010 an 8,000-gallon dual use diesel underground storage tank (UST #1) was removed from Badger Road Elementary School on the northwest end of the school, north of the school gym building. A new 4,000-gallon dual use diesel UST was installed in the same excavation. Confirmation samples indicated diesel range organics (DRO) remained in soil; and DRO, benzene, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in groundwater above DEC cleanup levels.

Action Information

Action Date Action Description DEC Staff
5/20/2009 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC received and reviewed UST Site Assessment/Release Investigation/Corrective Action Plan (SA/RI/CAP) for the FNSB School District Areawide UST Improvements Project/Contract No. 08-SDGPRJ-01, prepared by Independent Consultants Associated (ICA). 11/30/2010 Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other DEC received Badger Elementary School Facility ID #3498 8,000-Gallon Diesel Underground Storage Tank Site Assessment/Tank Closure Report dated Nov 2010, prepared by ICA. The tank system was removed and recycled "as is" for future use. Approximately 245 cy of diesel contaminated soil and approximately 233 gallons of diseil contaminated water were removed and tranported to OIT for thermal remediation. Approximately 2-4 cy of contaminated soil (2,260 mg/kg) remains in the excavation, 3 to 5 feet bgs; soil could not be removed without jeopardizing the transformer. A shallow groundwater monitoring well (MW-1) was installed adjacent to the new tank. Clean (below ADEC cleanup levels) stockpiled soil may remain on site. (MBarnes) Willett Boger
6/3/2011 Update or Other Action DEC sent a letter to Borough commenting on work completed on LUST removal project. Addition characterization and release investigation needed to define extent of soil and ground water contamination. Willett Boger
