Problems/Comments
In the Fall of 1995, during the installation of a new vehicle gasoline UST 28-G-16 at the FAA Shop building a concrete crib and associated piping were encountered in the excavation. Stained soil was also found. Approximately 10 cy of stained soil was excavated and stockpiled. The crib and piping were disposed of at the Cold Bay dump. Samples from the excavation were collected and analyzed for metals, VOCs, BNAs, pesticides and PCBs. Results indicated that there were no hazardous waste present in the remaining soil, but no petroleum samples were collected and analyzed. The 2010 SI found DRO 7400 mg/kg, RRO 12000 mg/kg, and 1,2-dichloropropane at 0.15 mg/kg at 5' bgs. It is speculated that the source of this is a former septic or floor drain system that was observed when the UST was installed. In August 2019, a 1,500-gallon gasoline underground storage tank (UST #6) was removed at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Cold Bay Station. Analysis of samples, representative of soil potentially-impacted by UST #6, detected petroleum contaminants, but they were below DEC cleanup levels. During the tank investigation, contamination believed to be from the Bldg 601 Gas Shed was observed at the edge of the UST excavation. Analytical results from soils sampled in this area confirmed contaminant concentrations above cleanup levels, including diesel range organics at 5,060 mg/kg and other compounds. Information regarding UST 6 is tracked under Hazard ID 27187 / FAA Cold Bay Station UST 6).
