Problems/Comments
Underground Storage Tank (UST) 47-D-01 was a 1,000-gallon regulated diesel UST located at the former VHF site. The tank was closed by removal in 1994. 10 cubic yards of contaminated soil were properly excavated, stockpiled and later treated offsite. Confirmation samples at the limits of excavation detected DRO up to 9,000 mg/kg. The contractor was unaware of remaining contamination and continued excavation of an additional 2800 cubic yards of soil, including an unknown volume and concentration of contaminated soil. The 2800 cys of soil were placed along the cross-island road to improve the road near a hairpin turn. ADEC inspections at the hairpin turn have not indicated any signs of significant contamination.
On February 9, 2012, Staff granted a Cleanup Complete determination to this site based on historic data review [Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Biorka Island Station Living Quarters Summary of Evaluations and Determinations]

One sample in 1994 exceeded DRO Table B2 Ingestion cleanup levels, however ADEC has determined that attenuation and dispersal has limited the risk posed by the limited volume and concentration of soil. |
