Problems/Comments
This site is located in the Upper Unalaska Valley south of Ptarmigan Road. A concrete slab and 3 foot high building walls remain at the site. A test pit was dug in 2000 to investigate piping that was observed entering the building. 5 feet of piping and 10 cubic yards of contaminated soil were removed. Six soil samples were taken and analyzed for DRO, RRO, and PAHs. All samples exceeded the cleanup levels for DRO and ranged from 314 mg/kg to 4230 mg/kg. Three samples exceeded the cleanup level at the time for methylene chloride, ranging from 0.056 to 0.13 mg/kg. Three more soil samples were collected in 2001 near the previous excavation to determine the extent of contamination. Only one sample exceeded cleanup levels and contained DRO at 360 mg/kg. No groundwater was encountered at the site so no water samples were taken. TOC samples collected at the site were used to calculate a method three Alternative Cleanup Level for DRO, at 8,300 mg/kg.

8/20/2015 | Site Characterization Workplan Approved | The ADEC Contaminated Sites Program received the Final Dutch Harbor Limited Removal Action Work Plan, Amaknak and Unalaska Islands, Alaska. The work plan was not formally approved, but ADEC does not object to the site characterization portions of the work plan. A report should be submitted documenting these site characterization activities. A separate work plan or work plan addendum should be submitted for the limited removal action anticipated for summer of 2016, which details the proposed work as required in 18 AAC 75.360. | Jessica Morris |
