Problems/Comments

On September 27, 2011 a 2,500-gallon diesel underground storage tank (UST) and associated piping were removed from the former Delta Motors site. Soil samples collected from the diesel tank system documented contamination remaining above cleanup levels. Approximately 50 cubic yards of excavated soil from the diesel system exceeded cleanup levels with 266 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) diesel range organics (DRO) and was used as backfill. An additional 15 cubic yards of excavated diesel system contaminated soil is currently stockpiled on site. The extent of the diesel UST system contamination has not been defined. Need to define the extent of the diesel contamination. Need corrective action for the 15 cubic yards stockpiled on site, the 50 cubic yards backfilled contaminated stockpile, and the remaining diesel contamination in the excavation. On the same date, the location of three 4,000-gallon leaded/unleaded gasoline tanks was assessed. The gasoline tanks and their associated piping were removed previously by the owner without a site assessment or certified UST worker. No documentation was provided that the six soil samples collected at 12 feet below ground surface for the former three leaded/unleaded gasoline tanks was at the correct location or depth (trenching was not done to verify tank excavation location or depth). There were no piping or dispenser or tank backfill field screening or analytical samples collected. Need to verify location and depth of gasoline tanks/piping/dispensers and complete assessment at appropriate location and depth including the backfill. Groundwater is estimated to be at 30 feet below ground surface. The on-property drinking water well located inside the shop building 30 feet from the USTs was sampled only for volatile organic compounds (VOC) by method 524.2. No gasoline range (GRO) or diesel range organics (DRO) drinking water samples were collected. The drinking water well sample has 1.27 micrograms per liter (ug/l) tetrachloroethene (PCE). Need further monitoring of the on-property drinking water well.

3/12/2014 Underground Storage Tank Site Characterization or Assessment Underground storage tank (UST) assessment & closure report from Shannon & Wilson received by ADEC on 11-23-11. ADEC-approval to conduct(UST) closure was given to owner on August 25, 2011. Site was previously a retail gas station and is presently an auto repair shop. On September 27, former fuel dispensers, three former 4,000-gallon gasoline UST's, and one 2,500-gallon diesel UST were removed during closure. Eighteen soil samples were collected and analyzed for gasoline range organics (GRO), diesel range organics (DRO), and benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene & Total xylenes (BTEX). One soil sample was analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and one soil sample was analyzed for lead. One water sample was collected from the onsite water well via a bathroom sink and analyzed for volatile organic compounds. Seven of ten soil samples were above ADEC cleanup levels for DRO. GRO was detected in five soil samples and benzene were detected in two soils samples. Toluene and total xylenes were detected in four soil samples. PAH's were detected, but not above ADEC cleanup levels. Tetrachloroethene was detected in the water analysis of VOC's. Amy Rodman
