Problems/Comments
Site OT099 was the location of a drum containment pad and fenced area. Potential sources of contamination include drums stored at the site, as well as heavy equipment and drum crushing activities that have occurred at the site. In 2001 and 2002, drums were collected from the area of Galena and staged at OT099 prior to crushing operations. In September 2002, the fence and containment pad liners were removed from OT099, and the site was leveled. ADOT&PF used the site for heavy equipment storage from 2002 to 2005
In 2005, numerous stains were observed in the southern portion of the site. Reports from the drum crushing operation indicate that these stains had not been present following the drum-crushing. Additional drums were observed in highly degraded condition in association with a gravel pile, however the gravel and drums were not present in 2009. In 2011, four soil borings were advanced in the area of previously observed surface and subsurface contamination, to a depth of 16 feet. Six groundwater monitoring wells were also advanced in 2011 as part of a basewide groundwater monitoring effort.
During an interim removal action in 2010, one 20ft x 20ft area was excavated to 4ft, with the approximately 59 cubic yards of soil removed and transported to the long term soil stockpile at Million Gallon Hill. Confirmation samples indicate that remaining contamination exists below cleanup levels. An additional 26 small surface stains were excavated to a minimum area of 3ft x 4ft, to a minimum depth of 12 inches. Confirmation samples indicate that all contaminants occur at concentrations below cleanup levels.
In 2011, three 10ft x 10ft excavations removed an additional 50 cubic yards of soil, with analytical samples indicating that remaining contaminants occur at concentrations below cleanup levels.
