Problems/Comments

In 2001, soil contamination was discovered at the Kotlik Yupik Corporation Former Bulk Fuel AST Farm during a site reconnaissance. The tank farm was located adjacent to the west of the new consolidated tank farm that was completed in 2001. Later in 2001, the tanks located at the Kotlik Yupik Corporation Former Bulk Fuel AST Farm were removed. The site consisted of six ASTs with a combined capacity of 220,000 gallons, including gasoline and diesel fuel. The ASTs rested directly on the ground with timbers along the side to prevent rolling. Above-ground piping ran along the tank farm and underground to the gas station pumphouse. A leaking fuel pipe connection underneath the pump house was noted during the site reconnaissance. Thirteen test pits were dug along the perimeter of the tank farm and one dug at the gas station pumphouse. Five soil samples collected at the depths of 0.5, 2.0, and 3.0 feet bgs, contained DRO up to 6,250 mg/kg, GRO up to 847 mg/kg, benzene up to 5.5 mg/kg, toluene up to 8.6 mg/kg, and ethylbenzene up to 10 mg/kg. The testpits locations were limited due to standing surface water. A sediment sample collected to the west of the tank farm exhibited a sheen when agitated and a hydrocarbon odor was noted at one of the testpits. Groundwater was encountered between 0.5 and 3.0 feet bgs at one location.
