Problems/Comments
Last Updated: October 2, 2017 Site SS021 is located in the southern portion of the cantonment triangle at the FOL. The primary features within or near Site SS021 include the Former Building 1549 (Old Fire Station) and the Former Building 1548 (Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants [POL] Operations Office). The former Building 1548 was constructed west of the fire station in 1945. No release history has been found for Building 1548, which was demolished in 1974. Building 1549, formerly known as Building T-111, was a two-story, 50-foot by 60-foot wooden frame structure built in 1945. No release history was found for Building 1549, which was demolished in the 1970s. Groundwater contamination at Site SS021 has been attributed to the upgradient Site SS017 (Former Truck Fill Stands) and is being addressed through an approved work plan for SS014 (Hazard ID 3965) and SS017 (Hazard ID 26312). Contamination from perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), associated with aqueous film forming foam (AFFF), will be investigated under CG109 AFFF Release Areas (Hazard ID 26787). Site status for SS021 is determined to be Non-Qualifying.

4/25/2017 | Meeting or Teleconference Held | A restoration Advisory Board meeting was held in Galena, Alaska. Preliminary site investigation results were presented from the 2016 Site Investigation for Per-Florinated Compounds (PFCs). Four sites in Galena have confirmed PFOS and PFOA in soil and groundwater above DEC cleanup levels including site SS021. Two additional sites were confirmed to have PFOS in soil exceeding DEC cleanup levels. | Dennis Shepard |
9/25/2017 | Update or Other Action | The Air Force submitted a request for Administrative Closure of Site SS021. The request is based on the absence of any petroleum source area on the SS021 site. Petroleum contaminants in groundwater are attributed the upgradient site SS017. Cleanup and remediation activities addressing migration of petroleum contamination to groundwater at site SS021 are being conducted at the upgradient site SS017. In April 2017 the Air Force reported that Per-Florinated Compounds (PFCs) have been identified within the site boundaries. The Air Force proposed conducting a Remedial Investigation and any required remedial action under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act (CERCLA). | Dennis Shepard |
9/29/2017 | Update or Other Action | PFOA and PFOS were detected in soil and groundwater samples above the Alaska cleanup levels at AFFF Area 3, Building 1549 Old Fire Station. The Air Force has designated a new Site CG109 to address the areas identified as impacted by Perflorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and Perflorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS). DEC is creating a new Site CG109 (Hazard ID 26787) to document all further Remedial investigation and any required remedial action under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation & Liability Act (CERCLA) for PFOA and PFOS contamination at this site. Site status for SS021 (Hazard ID 25909) is determined to be Non-Qualifying. | Dennis Shepard |
