Problems/Comments
During an investigation conducted in support of a heating oil system upgrade, soil samples were collected from beneath an AST and near a UST used for overflow prevention; and vapor probes were installed along the piping run. No evidence of contamination was found, however a groundwater grab sample contained benzene at 0.030 mg/l. The prison is located near several FUDS sites, some of which have not been fully characterized, therefore the source of the groundwater contamination detected at the prison is unknown. Drinking water wells to the west of the prison facility were sampled and contaminants were not detected.

12/18/2012 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Reviewed Fuel System Investigation Report for Anvil Mountain Correctional Center. Several soil borings were advanced as part of a heating oil system upgrade near to and underneath a large AST and near a UST used for overflow prevention, and soil vapor probes were installed along the piping runs. A surface water sample was also collected from the secondary containment for the AST and did not contain detectable DRO or BTEX. Contamination was not indicated at any of the sample locations; the highest DRO in soil was 16.4 mg/kg, however a groundwater grab sample collected from an angled borehole beneath the AST contained benzene at 0.0357 mg/l. The detection was confirmed in a duplicate sample. There are several Federal Facility Sites in this vicinity that has not been fully characterized, however the specific source of the benzene in groundwater is unknown. The prison is attached to the City of Nome water system. | Bill O'Connell |
