Problems/Comments
The Unalakleet River/Trail Creek site is located east of Unalakleet upstream from the confluence with Norton Sound. This site consisted of 1,057 discarded 55-gallon military fuel drums scattered along the banks of Unalakleet River and Trail Creek. During RAs in 2002 and 2005, 1,032 military fuel drums were removed. However, no evidence of impacted environmental media (e.g., staining, odor, stressed/denuded vegetation, or sheen) was observed during removal efforts (ISI 2003; Jacobs 2006). Drums were disposed in the Unalakleet City landfill. An additional removal effort in 2010 removed 25 additional 55-gallon military fuel drums identified during the 2006 RA. DRO contaminated soil as high as 8,500 mg/kg, was removed in 2010. A total of approximately 2 cubic yards of DRO contaminated soil associated with 2 fuel drums was removed from the site.
