12/7/2012 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | Reviewed Contaminated Soil Removal Action, KPC Career Center Soldotna. Apparent petroleum contamination was encountered while excavating for footings for the new Career Center in June 2012. The contamination was found in a layer of sandy gravel from 0-3 feet bgs. Following the initial removal of approximately 360 cubic yards of soil, confirmation sample ESW-19 from an excavation sidewall contained DRO at 2,110 mg/kg. No other confirmation samples contained contaminants above cleanup levels. In an effort to delineate the extent of contamination, ten test pits were excavated and field screening was conducted. Based on the information from the test pits, additional excavation was conducted in the vicinity of sample ESW-19 resulting in the removal of an additional 130 cy of soil. The 490 cy stockpile was initially stored on a 10-mil liner, then transported to a future parking lot where the soil was spread and will be incorporated into the parking lot sub base in 2013. Final confirmation soil samples did not contain contaminants above cleanup levels except for sample ESW-24, which contained DRO at 371 mg/kg. | Bill O'Connell |
