DEC signed the Final 2018 Decision Document for Source Area ZZ088, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, dated May 2021. The USAF is managing remediation of contamination at Source Area ZZ088 in accordance with the State-Eielson Agreement (USAF 2014b) and the Defense Environmental Restoration Program. Source Area ZZ088 is located at the North Remote 2 (NR2) facility, a mountain top communications facility owned by the USAF. Remedial work to address residual lead and fuel contamination is planned for the summer of 2022. |

DEC provided review comments for the Draft Uniform Federal Policy – Quality Assurance Project Plan (UFP-QAPP), Environmental Construction and Services, Remedial Action – Construction at Multiple sites: TU077, SS079, CG517 and ZZ088, Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska (February 2022). The UFP-QAPP details the remedial excavation services to be performed at Eielson Air Force Base (AFB) sites TU077, SS079, CG517, and ZZ088. Remedial excavation is proposed at sites TU077, SS079, and CG517 to remove up to 6,500 cubic yards (cy) of POL-contaminated soil in the vadose zone in order to eliminate the potential exposure concerns to human health and the environment. Remedial excavation is proposed at site ZZ088 to remove up to 350 cy of lead contaminated soil, as well as encapsulate the former communications building frame with a concrete cap. |
