The ADEC Contaminated Sites Program conditionally approved the Final version of the March 2013 Site Investigation Report for Sanak Island, Alaska FUD Site. An inventory of the site area showed the presence of deteriorated buildings; mechanical, electrical, and plumbing parts; vehicle parts; batteries; fuel and storage tanks; drums; various metal and wood debris; a gravel pit; depressions that are suspected to be the locations of buried debris. A geophysical survey was conducted for three areas at the site. The results of the survey indicated the potential for buried metal at the temporary camp area and a potential dump site. Soil and sediment samples were collected and analyzed for GRO, DRO, RRO, VOCs, PCBs, PAHs, and metals. Surface water samples were collected and analyzed for VOCs, PAHs, GRO, DRO, RRO, TAqH, TAH, and metals. Lead was detected in soil samples at concentrations above the ADEC cleanup level. Lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, PCBs, acenaphthylene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, chrysene, and dibenz(a,h)anthracene concentrations were detected above the ADEC cleanup level in sediment samples.
