Problems/Comments
On 11/23/11 a vehicle drove off Hurst Road and struck the side of a residence, the impact moved the structure off of its foundation and caused the fuel line to an aboveground heating oil tank to become severed and release approximately 40 gallons of diesel to the ground surface adjacent to and beneath the building. Vapors have been reported inside the residence. There is on on-site drinking water well and the Chena Slough borders the property. Constituents of number 1 (arctic grade) diesel fuel and additives: Arctic Flow Plus and Arctic Shield were the primary contaminants of potential concern. The site was transferred to the Contaminated Sites Program in August 2013, after which a soil cleanup was completed.

Thirty-eight field samples and 4 analytical samples were collected. Diesel range organics (DRO) were detected above DEC migration to groundwater cleanup levels in three soil samples taken from 3 feet beneath the ground surface in a small area adjacent to the main entrance of a mobile home. Concentrations of these DRO results ranged from 2250 to 4910 mg/kg. Exceedances of ethylbenzene (0.302 mg/kg) and total xylene (3.01 mg/kg) were also detected in one sample. | Michael Hooper |
7/20/2018 | Site Visit | Site Visit conducted to evaluate site conditions. | Michael Hooper |
8/1/2018 | Document, Report, or Work plan Review - other | DEC has reviewed the February 26, 2018 Soil Sampling Report for 3201 Hurst Road, North Pole, preparedby Restoration Science & Engineering, LLC. Six analytical samples were collected. Results of the sampling event indicated diesel range organic migration to groundwater cleanup level (CULs) exceedance ranging from 1430 to 5980 mg/kg in three samples taken from 3 to 4 feet beneath the ground surface in a small area adjacent to the main entrance of a mobile home. Either non-detect or below CULs were observed for all six samples for polyaromatic hydrocarbons and volatile organic carbon compounds and for the remaining three DRO samples. | Michael Hooper |
