Problems/Comments
A discharge/release of petroleum was discovered through soil sampling results in connection with a DoD-funded NALEMP program site investigation in July 2013 on behalf of the Native Village of Tetlin. The site is located on Tetlin Native Corporation land on the south side of the Alaska Highway between the highway and Midway Lake, southeast of the Midway Lake turnout. The release is likely from deteriorated 55-gallon drums, vehicle equipment and parts possibly connected to construction of the CANOL Pipeline in the 1940s. Future action under NALEMP is currently underway through the direction of the Tetlin Village Council.

6/6/2016 | Site Characterization Report Approved | DEC Approval for Removal Action Report, Midway Lake and Midway Lake North Sites, May 2016 – Revision 1. The limited sampling program resulted in the following conclusions: (1) Diesel range organics (DRO) and residual range organics (RRO) were identified above the DEC’s migration to groundwater cleanup level in select areas; (2) Lead was identified in soil beneath a broken battery and requires small scale cleanup, and could be indicative of additional releases; (3) Metals were identified a several locations that are hypothesized to be background levels at most locations; and (4) Limited sediment and surface water testing did not indicated substantial impacts in sampled locations. Future work is proposed. | John Carnahan |
